Those in South Carolina who are found guilty of drunk driving already face serious consequences, but one group wants to make the penalties for drunk driving even harsher.
Lawmakers in South Carolina are looking to reform DUI laws. More specifically, officials are considering a law that would require anyone who is convicted of DUI to have a Breathalyzer installed in their vehicle.
Legislators considering changes to the law were recently visited by members of Mothers Against Drunk Driving who came to show their support of the proposed changes. Other supporters also joined the meeting to hear what progress has been made on the Interlock Law.
South Carolina already requires some drivers to have the interlock system installed in their vehicle. Currently, around 600 drivers have a Breathalyzer installed in their car.
It is unclear if the law will be passed. At this time, lawmakers and officials with the Department of Motor Vehicles are still reviewing the details of the law.
Other states around the country have made Breathalyzers a mandatory requirement for those who are caught driving drunk. Right now, 14 states have Interlock Laws.
"It's an obtrusive technology and MADD believes if you violate the public's trust and drive drunk it's not too much to ask for this device to be on your vehicle," one MADD representative said.
If the law is passed, the stakes would be even higher for those who are convicted of DUI. Now and in the future, anyone who is charged with drunk driving would do well to consult with an experienced DUI attorney. An attorney can mount an aggressive defense against the charges, as well as investigate the case to be sure law enforcement acted appropriately and followed proper protocol.
